DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Minnesota Power on Monday has asked the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) for approval of a 134 million dollar or 17.8 percent rate increase.
If the request is approved the average monthly bill for residential customers would increase by about 24 dollars.
The rate request is due to increased costs being incurred by the power company. Minnesota Power says that includes ongoing operations and maintenance of power generation, transmission and distribution systems, investments in renewable energy and inflationary increases.
The filing for an increase with the MPUC is the first step in a process that could take a year or longer. While that regulatory process is underway, the MPUC will set an interim rate increase that will be in effect until final rates are approved.
Beginning in January, that would be an increase of 15 percent or about 15 dollars more per month for residential customers. Minnesota Power says much of that increase would be offset by recently announced bill credits.
If the final approved rate increase is less than the interim rates, the company would refund the difference to customers with interest.
